[a cause of spiritual depression]—physical conditions. Is anyone surprised? Does someone hold the view that as long as you are a Christian it does not matter what the condition of your body is? Well, you will soon be disillusioned if you believe that. Physical conditions play their part in all this ... there are certain physical ailments which tend to promote depression. Thomas Carlyle, I suppose, is an outstanding illustration of this. Or take that great preacher who preached in London for nearly forty years in the last century—Charles Haddon Spurgeon—one of the truly great preachers of all time. That great man was subject to spiritual depression, and the main explanation in his case was undoubtedly the fact that he suffered from a gouty condition which finally killed him.... And there are many, I find, who come to talk to me about these matters, in whose case it seems quite clear to me that the cause of the trouble is mainly physical ... tiredness, overstrain, illness. You cannot isolate the spiritual from the physical for we are body, mind and spirit. The greatest and the best Christians when they are physically weak are more prone to an attack of spiritual depression than at any other time and there are great illustrations of this in the Scriptures. Let us give a word of warning at this point. We must not forget the existence of the devil, nor allow him to trap us into regarding as spiritual that which is fundamentally physical. But we must be careful on all sides in drawing this distinction; because if you give way to your physical condition you become guilty in a spiritual sense. If you recognize, however, that the physical may be partly responsible for your spiritual condition and make allowances for that, you will be better able to deal with the spiritual.

영적침체의  한 원인

 

 

영적침체의 원인으로 육체적인 조건이라고 하면 놀랄 분이 계실까요? 어떤 분은 우리가 크리스챤인데 육체적인 것은 문제가 될 것이 없다고 생각하시는 분도 계실 것입니다. 만일 그렇게 믿고 계시다면 그는 조만간 자신이 잘못 생각하고 있음을 깨닫게 될 것입니다. 육체적인 상태는 이 모든 일에 있어서 그 나름대로의 역할을 합니다. 어떤 육체적인 질병은 영적 침체를 촉진하기도 합니다.

 

제가 생각하기에는 토마스 카알라일(Thomas Carlyle)이 이에 대한 가장 뛰어난 예증이라고 생각합니다. 혹은 런던에서 지난세기 40년을 목회하였던 위대한 설교자 아니 모든 시대에 있어서 진정 위대한 설교자 중의 한사람인 찰스 스펄젼(Charles Haddon Spurgeon)을 예를 들수도 있습니다. 이 위대한 사람 역시도 영적 침체에 빠진 적이 있습니다. 그의 경우에 있어서 의심할 여지없이 그를 죽음으로까지 몰고갔던 통풍이 영적침체에 있어서 주요원인이기도 합니다. 저에게 여러 사람들이 이런 문제들에 대하여 이야기 해주는 것을 들었습니다. 신경과민, 피로함, 질병등 여러 가지 육체적인 문제들로 인하여 영적 침체에 빠진 이야기들입니다.

 

우리는 몸과 마음과 영을 가지고 있기 때문에 영적인 것을 육체적인 것에서 분리시킬 수 없습니다. 가장 위대하고 훌륭한 크리스챤이라 할지라도 육체적으로 연약할 때 다른 그 어떤 시기보다 더 쉽게 영적침체의 공격을 받습니다. 이러한 예는 성경에 매우 많습니다.

 

이 시점에서 한마디 경고를 드립니다. 우리는 마귀의 존재를 잊어서는 결코 안됩니다. 그리고 마귀가 근본적으로 육체적인 문제인 것을 영적인 것으로 생각하도록 속이지 못하게 해야 합니다. 우리는 이 차이를 구분하는데 모든 면에서 각별히 주의해야 합니다. 왜냐하면 당신이 육체적인 조건에 굴복하면 영적인 면에서까지 과오를 범하게 되는 것입니다. 만일 여러분이 육체적 조건이 영적 상태에 부분적으로 책임이 있다는 것을 인식한다면, 여러분은 영적 문제를 좀더 잘 다룰수 있을 것입니다.

 

 

2월 18일 - 영적 침체의 궁극적 원인

February 18	We are not ignorant of his devices (2 Corinthians 2:11)
In the last analysis ... [there is only one] cause of spiritual depression—it is the devil, the adversary of our souls. He can use our temperaments and our physical condition. He so deals with us that we allow our temperament to control and govern us, instead of keeping temperament where it should be kept. There is no end to the ways in which the devil produces spiritual depression. We must always bear him in mind. The devil's one object is so to depress God's people that he can go to the man of the world and say, 'There are God's people. Do you want to be like that?' Obviously the whole strategy of the adversary of our souls, and God's adversary, is to depress us and to make us look as this* man looked when he was passing through this period of unhappiness.       Indeed I can put it, finally, like this; the ultimate cause of all spiritual depression is unbelief. For if it were not for unbelief even the devil could do nothing. It is because we listen to the devil instead of listening to God that we go down before him and fall before his attacks. This is why this psalmist keeps on saying to himself: 'Hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise Him . . .' He reminds himself of God. Why? Because he was depressed and had forgotten God, so that his faith and his belief in God and in God's power, and in his relationship to God, were not what they ought to be. We can indeed sum it up by saying that the final and ultimate cause is just sheer unbelief. *(The Psalmist, as recorded in Psalm 42.)

영적 침체의 궁극적 원인

 

 

결론적으로 영적 침체의 단 하나이자 유일한 원인은 우리 영혼의 대적자 마귀입니다. 마귀는 우리의 기질과 우리의 육체적 상태를 이용합니다. 사단은 우리가 기질을 잘 통제하도록 하지 못하고 오히려 기질이 우리를 지배하고 주장하도록 만드는 것입니다. 우리를 영적으로 침체하게 하는 마귀의 방법은 끝이 없습니다.

 

우리는 언제나 마귀를 마음속에 유념하고 있어야 합니다. 마귀의 유일한 목적은 하나님의 백성을 영적으로 침체시켜, 세상사람들에게 가서 '자 보아라. 이들이 하나님의 백성이다. 이와같이 너희도 영적으로 침체되기를 원하는가?" 말합니다. 우리 영혼의 원수이자 하나님의 대적자인 마귀의 전체 전략은 분명합니다. 우리를 영적으로 침체시켜서 불행한 시절을 통과하는 사람이 보여주었던 모습을 가지게 하는 것입니다. (시편 42편을 참조하시오)

 

저는 결국 다음과 같이 말할 수 있습니다. 모든 영적 침체의 궁극적인 원인은 불신앙입니다. 왜냐하면 불신앙만 없다면 아무리 마귀라 할지라도 아무 것도 할 수 없기 때문입니다. 우리가 마귀 앞에서 쓰러지고, 마귀의 공격에 넘어지는 이유는 하나님의 말씀을 청종하는 대신에 마귀의 말에 귀를 기울이기 때문입니다.

 

그래서 시편 저자는 자신에게 계속하여 말했던 것입니다. "너는 하나님을 바라라. 그 얼굴의 도우심을 인하여 내가 오히려 찬송하리로다" 시편 저자는 지금 자신에게 하나님을 상기시키고 있습니다. 왜 그렇게 합니까? 그는 영적으로 침체되었고 하나님을 잊고 있었기 때문에 하나님에 대한 신뢰와 믿음, 그리고 하나님의 능력과 하나님과의 관계 안에서 가져야 할 믿음과 신뢰 가운데 자신이 서 있어야 할 위치를 잃어버렸던 것입니다. 우리는 지금까지 영적 침체의 원인에 대한 총 결론으로 순전히 불신앙이라고 말할 수 있습니다.
